You have the power to help safeguard the future of the Monterey Bay Aquarium by making an endowed gift. Your gift is an investment in our future that will help our programs to grow and thrive for years to come.
Knowing that the threats facing the ocean are growing and will be with us for generations to come, we urge our Ocean Legacy donors to make an estate plan gift to the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Endowment Fund for the Future of the Ocean. This permanent endowment fund supports a broad range of programs including education, research, conservation initiatives and new exhibits. Your gift to our endowment will provide ongoing support for our ocean conservation work every year—forever. Growing our endowment and securing our programs for the future is a top priority.
You may also choose to designate your gift to our Children's Education Endowment Fund. In 2011, as part of our long-range commitment to inspire future generations of ocean stewards, we established this special endowment fund to ensure that school children and their teachers are always able to visit the Aquarium free of charge.
Each year, we distribute 4 percent of the invested funds' current market value to support our programs while the principle remains intact. Our endowment total is over $240 million and, in 2017, we distributed $6.2 million for our programs. Growing this fund is our top priority. Your gift to our endowment will continue to provide critical support for our work far into the future. It is truly your legacy for the Aquarium and the ocean.
Personal endowments can be created in the donor's name(s), or to honor a family member or friend. Contributions may be pledged over a number of years. Endowments can be supplemented with additional lifetime gifts or through an estate plan. Donors contributing $100,000 or more to build our endowment will be welcomed into the Aquarium's inaugural Endowment Society and will receive a number of special donor benefits.
Your gift to the Aquarium's endowment will last in perpetuity, if you use appropriate language.

Long-time supporters Susan and Charlie want to make sure the Monterey Bay Aquarium continues to flourish long after they're gone. They also want to memorialize Charlie's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jones. They make a $100,000 donation to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and establish The Charles and Lilly Jones Endowment Fund. We invest their gift, and each year a portion of the income from the invested money will be used to support our mission in honor of Charles and Lilly Jones. The rest of the income is reinvested in the fund, which allows it to grow and support us indefinitely. Susan and Charlie qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction on their taxes, and Charlie's parents are recognized on our Benefactors plaque in the Aquarium.
